or myxoedema, but when considered in combination diagnostic efficiency was much improved. This combination of tests is shown to be especially useful in the investigation of patients with changes in body iodine pools or thyroxine-binding globulin levels. Reasons are given for regarding this pair of tests as being more generally useful than any of the other possible combinations at present available. The resin sponge test kit was found to be satisfactory both technically and in respect of cost.

Uptake but Normal Release of Thyroid Hormone by Thyroid Gland in Response to TSH Administration in Subclinical Hypothyroidism
Background: Subclinical hypothyroidism is characterized by normal circulating thyroid hormone levels with super-normal TSH concentrations in absence of clinical manifestations. In majority of subjects, an etiologic factor is often identified. Moreover, therapy with levothyroxine normalizes serum TSH concentration while maintaining normal thyroid hormone concentrations. However, the exact pathop...
متن کاملUptake of iodine and bromine by ion-exchange resins in aqueous solution.
The uptakes of molecular iodine and bromine by both strong acid cation (Dowex 50W-X4 and X8) and strong base anion (Dowex 1-X4 and X8) exchange resins have been studied in aqueous solutions at 25 degrees C. An empirical formula for the amount of solute taken up by the resin in mmol per gram of dry resin, Q, as a function of the solute concentration in M (mol dm(-3)), C, was derived. Direct prop...
متن کاملDetermination of serum thyroxine using a resin sponge technique.
A method is described for the determination of serum thyroxine using ion-exchange resin sponges. The principle is based on the use of protein-binding sites and part of the technique is similar to the Triomet resin uptake test. An isotope extraction recovery procedure is incorporated in the method. Studies of factors influencing the analysis are reported and the results of tests of accuracy, pre...
متن کاملComparison of population iodine estimates from 24-hour urine and timed-spot urine samples.
BACKGROUND Median urine iodine concentration (UIC; μg/L) in spot urine samples is recommended for monitoring population iodine status. Other common measures are iodine:creatinine ratio (I/Cr; μg/g) and estimated 24-hour urine iodine excretion (UIE; I/Cr × predicted 24-hour Cr; μg/day). Despite different units, these measures are often used interchangeably, and it is unclear how they compare wit...
متن کاملSystematic review of studies evaluating urinary iodine concentration as a predictor of 24-hour urinary iodine excretion for estimating population iodine intake.
OBJECTIVE To examine the usefulness of "spot" urine iodine concentrations (UICs) in predicting 24-hour urine iodine excretion (UIE) for estimating average population iodine intake. METHODS An electronic literature search was conducted for articles published through 19 May 2013 in MEDLINE (from 1950), EMBASE (from 1980), and the Cochrane Library (from 1993) using the terms "urinary excretion (...
